Purchasing your first home is an exciting step in life.  Just as you probably did with your first car, you’ll want to keep it clean and in perfect shape for as long as possible.  You will want to share your new spot with friends, and you will probably go out and buy your first toolbox.

Lawn care is a part of home ownership

Keeping up with the lawn is a vital part of home ownership.  You don’t want your yard being the eyesore of the neighborhood.  Proper landscaping, great lawn care, and curb appeal will boost your equity as well, so it’s an all-around good idea to invest in the outdoor areas of your home.  

Keep a close eye on your roof

Replacing a roof will cost thousands of dollars, so it’s better to properly maintain your roof to add longevity.  A good roof can keep you and your family dry and protected for more than a decade if properly maintained.

Make sure to keep your gutters free of debris.  Clogged gutters cause water backup in troublesome places.  Not only is it bad for your roof, but pooling water around the foundation of your home can cause some costly problems too.  

Regularly change out your HVAC filter

Your HVAC unit will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer if you treat it right.  One of the most important steps you can take to keep your HVAC unit in working order is to regularly replace your home’s air filter.  

The air intake of your unit filters through the air in your home several times per day.  If you have pets, the filter can get pretty dirty pretty fast. Make sure you’re changing the filter at least once per month.  

Keep your refrigerator coils clean

Most people don’t understand that it’s necessary to clean the coils on your refrigerator.  The coils on the back of your refrigerator are what cools your box. When the coils get dirty, your unit’s cooling system has to work harder to keep your food cold.  

A simple vacuum or dusting every few months could save you hundreds in repair bills.  Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty, and take a proactive approach to home maintenance.  

Take care of your hot water heater

The water running through your plumbing has small sediment that can cause buildup inside of your hot water heater.  The sediment buildup can build up too much and cause your system to fail.  This can be avoided with some simple maintenance.  

To avoid a huge repair bill, try draining your water heater every once in a while, and remove any built-up sediment.  Refill the unit, and you’re back in business.

You may also set your thermostat on the water heater to 120 while you’re missing.  The temp change will save you up to five percent on your energy consumption.
