When you buy a home it’s normally not exactly what you want it to be. Maybe all the windows are in the right place, and maybe it has the right color carpet, but maybe the walls just aren’t the right color. Sometimes it’s not even about the home itself, but simply about the things you bring into the home.
You can do almost anything you want with your home when you own it. Put up wood paneling, carpet the hardwood floors, or add an accent wall. How to decorate, though, can often make the biggest difference.
Upholster Your Own Furniture
If you’re not a fan of the furniture you have, it could be that it was a hand-me-down, bought used, or that it’s just old, you don’t have to replace it to make it new. There are all sorts of things you can do, depending on the piece. If it’s a chair or couch that is material “based” you could simply reupholster it. Shop for the fabric you like and then find some DIY videos online with instruction on how to get the job done.
If you have a wood chair you can also redo it. Maybe you want to sand it down and then repaint or restain it. Maybe you want to add a cushioned seat to it. The sky’s the limit, or your imagination is anyway.
Create Your Own Art
Furniture isn’t all that makes a room. So does the art and other decor you have around the space. If you have any creative or artistic ability you should use it to create your own unique pieces. If you have children you can even turn their art into amazing wall pieces.
The easiest way to turn kids art into something awesome if to get it matted and framed. Your own art can be whatever you want it to be, from making clay sculptures and decoupaging boxes and vases to painting a mural directly on the wall. Get creative and make your house uniquely your own.
Make Some Throw Pillows
If you’re the crafty type you can also save a lot of money on home decor by making things on your own. Sometimes it’s hard to find just the right throw pillow or blanket, but a trip to the craft or fabric store will give you hundreds of options and you can make your own. Pillows are really easy to make, even if you don’t have a sewing machine.
Throw blankets can also be fairly easy to make depending on what you’re looking for. If you want to make a quilt or knit an afghan you’ll definitely need a bit of skill and training. But if you’re good at such things then go for it!
